The Perfect Mother’s Day Present You Can Re-Gift EVERY YEAR

* Note: every product mentioned in this post (with the exception of the chips + wine) is vegan, cruelty-free, and sustainable or supports a nonprofit charity organization.

I know this does not apply to everyone, but my mother wants relatively little — and what she does want, she can provide for herself. This combined with her singular taste and dislike for clutter makes her fairly difficult to buy for.

And I know that that’s a common problem -- how are they so hard to buy for, and yet so good at buying for us??? -- so when I came up with the perfect, re-vamp annually, never-gonna-get-thrown-out gift idea, I knew I had to share it.

My mom is barred from my blog today, BTW. Although she could 110% just come on here anyways and see a full description of her gift. If you’re here, Mom, no offense, but eff off!?? What are you doing! You’re a 9-hour drive from this present right now, so you’re just torturing yourself!

Now, good thing we got that out of the way.

The principle of this idea is simple, and you’ve probably even heard it before: a lil homemade spa box for mom. But this customizable box is the perfect combination of personal, thoughtful, useful + mindful. You can fill it with whatever your mom loves best, and switch it up every year (unless she absolutely loves a few things from it, then you can just replenish her stash next Mom’s Day!).

I’m including a few similar, mindful options alongside what I actually purchased, but remember that this gift is exactly as delightful as you make it, so think about a few of your mama’s favorite things, and get shopping.

The Box

I found this gift box at Michael's -- I needed a decent size to hold the gifts I bought, so it was on the pricey side at $20. My mama's taste is very Country French, so I knew she'd want to reuse it -- even if only for adorable storage.

The Gifts

I figured out what I wanted to go in the box — every ingredient I could think of to create the ideal, relaxing afternoon soak in the bath.

Bath Bombs : The inspiration for this box came when I discovered Mom Bombs and the delightfully-titled BuyBombsHelpMoms.com . I was so enchanted  by their mission to help moms that I just had to get my mama the variety box. But if the $30 price tag is a little high when you’re building the whole gift, I also super recommend Moon Body Soul’s Mama Moon Gift Set  — a little birdie told me a 15% discount code that I may share if asked nicely. ;) Your purchase from Moon Body Soul will also support WaterAid, a nonprofit bringing clean water, toilets + hygiene to “everyone, everywhere”. Make a homemade bubble bath and seal in a mason jar for a no-waste option.

Lip Treatment : Bath bombs are the shit , but I felt like this box needed something else pamper-y. I know my mom recently broke up with Carmex after being loyal to it for decades , so I did some heavy Googling and found this so-called miracle lip treatment to replace her ex-favorite.

Candle : I opted for the Homesick New Mexico  candle, with notes of cactus, sandalwood and chile, since she splits time between NM and Oklahoma — and much, much prefers New Mexico. If your mom doesn’t need to be reminded of the smell of corn in your Illinois hometown where she still lives, opt for a Prosperity Candle (that provides reliable work + opportunity for growth to women in war zones) or one from Zoa Concept (owned and operated by a mom + daughter team), both so pretty, she'll want to upcycle the empty container into a planter or pencil holder.

Book : My mama is a big reader, so I knew I wanted to include a good book. We watched the absolute entirety of Gilmore Girls together when I was growing up, so I bought Lauren Graham’s Talking As Fast As I Can . You know your mama’s taste, but if you’re feeling lost I would recommend browsing this list of 46 books by women of color . I also encourage buying used books, even though they might not be as sparkly, in order to reduce your environmental impact.

Snack : I think the best thing to pair with a steamy, fragrant bath is a glass of wine or a few pieces of dark chocolate. Unfortunately, my mother has a level of taste in wine that I simply can’t afford, and she also has a pretty insane existing collection that is probably growing as I write this, while she’s dancing through the Italian countryside with my dad and their friends. She also doesn’t have much of a sweet tooth. I considered what treat my mom truly loves… and it’s potato chips. So I did some heavy Googling and found the fanciest potato chips ever — this bag of Jamon Iberico-flavored chips from Snackgold. Depending on what your mama loves, get her a bottle of Miraval rosé , or sustainably-made vegan + gluten-free cookie dough from Alpendough , or superfood coconut butter from Philosophie , or even the Black Truffle-flavored chips that came in a close second for me. I don't really expect my mom to eat chips in the tub, but if so -- more power to her. No judgment here!

And, of course, this gift can be shared with anyone -- not just your mama. This box would be the perfect way to spoil a loved one on a birthday, or a similar care package could be sent to your favorite exhausted grad student. Share your ideas + what magic you create below, and happy May!
